Description | To mark contrast/concession in academic prose, the conjunct however is uniformly preferred(Biber et al. 1999: 889). Nevertheless, in terms of its placement within a sentence it is possible to come across various positions, and despite the fact that initial position can generally be regarded as the unmarked position for linking adverbials, however (along with therefore and thus) also occurs in medial positions (ibid.: 891-892). The present paper thus looks into the distribution of however (and some other conjuncts) in academic prose style, while attempting to analyse its occurrence within a sentence. In addition, based on a sociolinguistic approach, the paper investigates possible differences in the use of the most common conjuncts by male and female authors. |
