Description | Corrosion products of metal archeological finds commonly conserve relicts of textile, wood, plants, human skin, piles (fur) and hair, insects and other objects of organic origin in the form of organic matter residues, mineralized substitutes (pseudomorphs) and negatives. Corrosion products represent a valuable medium which allows new approaches to investigation of past cultures. Current treatment and analyses of metal finds do not correspond to these possibilities. Most corrosion products are cleaned, and any perspective finds in them are definitely lost. Within the proposed project the process of organic matter origin objects mineralization by metal ions will be experimentally studied from the morphological and biochemical aspects and a free-access web database of identified residues (residues of known original properties) will be created and used for comparative analysis of residues discovered on original archeological finds. Simultaneously a methodology of archaeological excavation, analyse and conservation for main residue types in corrosion products will be elaborated. The project will contribute to increase the acquisition value of metal archaeological finds along with organic matter residues in corrosion products protection and conservation. |
