Description The present article suggests that any analysis of mediaeval German texts taking the phonetic form of language into consideration has to be based directly on the original manuscript. Standardized editions often obliterate phonetic variation, thus hindering comprehension. For example, the present analysis clearly indicates the difference in the phonetic realizations of the diphthongs ai/ay and ei/ey, which developed from -age- and -ege- by contraction; these diphthongs are both transcribed in K. Bartsch's edition as ei, which increases the number of homographs. By contrast, Bartsch distinguishes s (Germanic s) a z(z) (Germanic t) and restores the initial s in cluster sw-, which has no support in the original manuscript and which makes the language of the whole text unduly archaic.
