Description The text of the lecture delivered at the University of Bucharest in January 2007. The lecture presented begging poetry, a new literary genre that appeared in Byzantine literature in the middle of the 12th century, and compared it with similar literary products of the Latin West. Several examples of this genre in Byzantium were briefly introduced, which served as a basis for the subsequent presentation of general analogies in the literary developments in Byzantium and the West in the 12th century. Concrete parallels in the begging poetry of the above period were presented by way of a conclusion.
