| Description | The paper analyzes an unknown letter of King Sigismund to the bishop John the Iron of Litomyšl from 4th September 1417. The text is almost identical with another Sigismund's letter or manifest to the Bohemians of the same date, which warned the recipiants against inclination towards Hussitism. In the letter to the bishop of Litomyšl, who was one of the most important enemies of the Hussites in Bohemia, only the sharpest formulations were changed and a captatio benevolentiae was added, but the major part of the letter remained unchanged. The author speculates why the letter for the bishop of Litomyšl was issued in this way and how it might have been interpreted by the recipient. Annexed to the paper, there is a critical eddition of both the letters. |
