Description Economic and social changes after the year 1990 in the Czech Republic have been reflected also in the shopping habits of its inhabitants. Typical now is not only a standard form of everyday shopping for basic provisions in corner shops, but also what has become a standard is daily visiting of specialized retail chain stores. The decisive intensity is not seen in the core: periphery link but rather between the periphery and suburban zones where the largest shopping malls, hypermarkets, discount stores, and other shopping precincts are mostly situated. The aim of the article is to evaluate and draw a general conclusion based upon an extensive survey of the shopping habits and behaviour of people in the suburban parts of Brno (mainly in the Brno-venkov district). The objective is thus to assess the links between municipalities on the periphery, the suburban area close to the administrative border of the city and the inner city. The emphasis is put upon the suburban area where the largest shopping malls and hypermarkets are to be found.
