Description | The seminar will introduce the complexity of concepts used for studying detraditionalized religiosity (forms of religiosity not connected to any particular religious organization or tradition), mainly the concepts of "New Age", "the New Age movement", and "spirituality". The aim is to point out some of methodological problems related to the study of this type of religiosity, e.g. treating it as radically different when compared to institutionalized religion (the "spirituality versus religion" dichotomy), as one social or religious movement ("the New Age movement"), or emphasizing its individualistic nature. Examples of field researches focused on detraditionalized religiosity/spirituality will be discussed and related to the methodological questions outlined in the first part of the seminar. |
