Description Didactics of foreign languages supports the so called communicative approach in foreign language instruction. Teacher is supposed to communicate in targed language with pupils during the instruction, the mother tongue would be used in sporadic and justified situations. By that the opportunities to talk are created that can simulate real life situations. The paper presented results of the use of mother tongue usage analysis, that was carried out as a part of the CPV Video Study of English project. Proportions of utterances were calculated of the teacher and pupils in English and in Czech. The results indicate that mother tongue is being used more often and in situations that according to communicative approach could be solved in target language.
