Description The paper focuses on the decoration of the Kaunitz residence in Slavkov u Brna within the context of the early modern theory of décor. Paintings with a mythological subject were usually located on garden parterres or in selected spaces within private palaces. These subjects were assigned a nonrepresentational character, because of the "untruthfulness" of the sagas. By comparing several inventories, the paper attempts to determine the original function of several rooms, and attempts to interpret certain paintings by analysing their iconographical subject.
