Description Analytical methods based on laser light - sample surface interaction, namely Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrometry (LIBS) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), enable qualitative and semiquantitative analysis of samples with various type of matrices. Due to high spatial resolution of both methods, laser-assisted based methods can be used for elemental mapping in archaeological samples with hydroxyapatite matrix (teeth, bones). The methods require minimum or no sample preparation, short time for analysis and a lower risk of contamination. Ratios of Sr/Ba and Sr/Ca can give information about migration and diet during life time of animals. Another utilization of laser based method is mapping of matrix element (Ca, P) in pathological bones. Different phases of ostesis deformans can be characterized by changes of Ca/P ratio. In this study, utilization of LIBS and LA-ICP-MS methods for elemental mapping is verified.
