| Description | Ante Starčević was one of the most prominent and influential Croatian political thinkers and ideologues of the 19th century. He believed that the original Croatian state was founded in the 7th century and encompassed the whole Slavonic South with the exception of the territory of present-day Bulgaria and Macedonia. In accordance with this theory based on the willful interpretation of historical facts and the concept of the political nation he considered all inhabitants of the Slavonic South to be either Croats or Bulgarians. This paper examines the historical myths embedded in Starčević’s notion of Croatian national identity, particularly the position of Serbs and Bosniaks in his ideologized and idealized image of the Croatian national past. |
