Description The article attempts, on the basis of the information currently available to us, to throw light on the historical and artistic processes which influenced the mediaeval monastery complex of Porta Coeli in Předklášteří near Tišnov in the distant past, in particular the western portal of the basilica and the cloister, and which thus determined the final appearance of this important architectural work. My primary aim was to establish which features in the monastery complex can currently be classified as mediaeval, in other words to distinguish the remains of the original portal and other parts of the monastery structure (church, convent, chapel, fortifications) from later additions from whatever period. I did so with the help of both an analysis of the way the construction developed and an examination of the literature and unpublished documents and archive material.
