Description | The study examines the critical response that the representative picture Un Fete chez Rubens by Václav Brožík evoked from Czech and international art critics. It also analyses the literary and in particular the visual sources used by the painter when creating the work, and attempts to identify the probable motives and the immediate stimuli which led the artist to choose and elaborate this theme, belonging to the popular category of painted art history. In this context, the study also deals with connections with the views of Eugene Fromentin, contained in his book “The Masters of Past Time”, published in 1876. Last but not least, it attempts to draw attention to the obvious affinity that the concept of the painting has with the approaches used in staging contemporary theatre, and in particular with the aesthetics of “tableaux vivants” – specific art forms situated between theatre and the visual arts which were used in arts festivals at the time. |
