Description | The study concentrates on the decoration of one of paintings of Giacomo Tencalla in Libochovice, Abduction of Proserpine by the god Pluto. The painting conceals two levels of popularity, one relating to form and the other to content. The first is connected with the use of one and the same compositional design in the oeuvre of G. Tencalla, who in this respect consciously followed the approach of his predecessor Carpoforo Tencalla. The second line of popularity in the depiction is linked with a number of levels of meaning and allegory provided by the myth. In the case of Libochovice it is probably the amorous subtext of the story that is in the forefront, or more precisely the popular courtly presentation of political power through a marriage theme, that of abduction. On the basis of an iconographical analysis of the other rooms, the painting probably comes under the heading of courtly representation, linked with panegyric programmes in which the heroic depiction of abduction was used. |
