Description | Tradition of "Ciceronism" in 18th-century Italy and Rome, whereby learned guides accompanied aristocratic visitors and, directly in front of works of art, explained their aesthetic qualities to them and helped them to better appreciate them, is still alive in art history. This is evidenced by a number of contemporary art historians such as Michael Baxandall, Francis Haskell and Daniel Arasse, who present in a new light and in new contexts works that are well known and have been seen many times. Their dialogues with the works and with the viewers are indeed reminiscent of the social and entertaining ways of presenting works of art that were common in the times before the historicism and academic positivism of the 19th century. This book has the ambition of being a tribute to that "Ciceronian" tradition. |
