Description | Biofilm is defined as community of micro-organisms firmly adhered to biological or artificial surfaces which is surrounded by extracellular matrix. This important virulence-factor facilitates the adhesion to the surfaces, especially to the artificial surfaces of catheters and implants. It also protects cells against mechanical damage and actions of immunity system and antimicrobial compounds. The biofilm forming ability helps microbes to survive in the hosts body and biofilm layer becomes reservoir of the infection. The article discusses particular mechanisms of biofilm resistance to antimicrobials. |
