Description | The presentation analyses grammatical structures in news stories written in English. The characteristic shift of tenses occurring at the transition between the headline, the lead, and the rest of the article is explained from the point of view of functional-systemic grammar as a means of enhancing the interpersonal dimension of communication, i.e. as an essentially reader-oriented device. |
