Description The article deals with the changes of the reflection of the relation between the external reality and the inner reality of the perceiving subject which led to significant shift in the complex way of depicting the subject-object relation in literary works. The author shows that the ability of individual to understand the world around him (external reality) and to understand himself (inner reality, subjectivity) changes in the framework of the subject-object relation. The author points to the fact that the understanding of the inner reality (stressed is the inner reality) prevails in the period of Romanticism while in the period of Realism and Naturalism prevails the external reality (stressed is the object). According of the authors view comes at the end of the 19th century to the loss of understanding of both external and inner reality and the disharmony between the two poles arises. The way to the modern literature with its specific features is taken for a natural consequence of this process. The author connects in this way the character of the works of art with the quick development of the model of world (ie. reflection/concept of world), which is reflected in them.
