Description One of the most important building projects undertaken in Moravia during the baroque period was the construction and decoration between 1735-1757 of the pilgrimage Church of the Purification of the Virgin in Dub nad Moravou. A painting for the main altar on the theme Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the Purification of the Virgin was created by painter Josef Stern (1716-1775). This article is focused on the circumstances of creation of this work and compares Stern s altar painting with its sketch. The sketch (a contractual modello), regarded as missing, appeared in an art auction in 2009 in Vienna and is now in a private collection in Lower Austria.
