What will you learn?

This degree study programme is divided into two tracks: Linguistics and Literary and Cultural Studies. Each student chooses one specialization and the focus of their studies is in that track. All students must complete five type A/required courses. The remainder of the programme consists of type B/selective and type C/elective courses that the student chooses based on the track chosen. The student then writes a Master’s thesis based on the track and relevant coursework. With the exception of some courses in translation, all teaching, coursework, and exams in this study programme are carried out in the English language.

Career opportunities

Graduates with this degree are capable of complex written and oral expression in English. They have a deep knowledge of the literatures, cultures, and histories of the major English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, and the Commonwealth countries. They are able to analyse various forms and functions of language in diverse genres and communicative situations. In addition to work in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, and teaching at both the secondary and tertiary levels, graduates are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think and express themselves independently and critically.

Deadline for submitting applications: August 1 - November 30

Who the programme is intended for: The programme is offered to graduates of Bachelor’s studies in English language and literature, or other programmes focused on English language and literature and other related fields. The similarity of the fields will be assessed on the basis of the application for studies. For related fields, advanced knowledge of English at the C2 level according to SERRJ is expected.

Subject matter of the entrance examination: The entrance examination consists of a written test of practical English (English Proficiency Exam), which verifies the level of language competence of students (roughly C2 according to CEFR). The entrance examination is in Czech and English.

The written examinations for English Language and Literature and Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in English Language and Literature are identical. For applicants who apply to both programmes, the test result will be included in both programmes. The selection of applicants for the English Language and Literature programme will be based on a written examination. There is no oral examination.

Waiver of the entrance examination: The entrance examination can be waived for applicants who have passed the Bachelor’s examination in the field/programme of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University with an excellent (A) or very good (B) result. The entrance examination may also be waived for applicants whose overall result of the Bachelor's State Examination in programme of English Language and Literature at the MU Faculty of Arts was assessed as “passed with excellent results”. Applicants can ask for a waiver for the entrance examination via the e-application form, section "Application for waiver of the entrance examination".

Follow-up studies

Further studies are possible in the doctoral degree study programmes of English linguistics or English literature. The postgraduate programme is available in both internal and combined forms.
