The program is interdisciplinary at its best. You will be introduced to the tenets of film and theatrical studies, media and cultural studies, and cultural anthropology. You will garner a stronger understanding of the history and current state of film, theatre and the media industries in Central Europe. And you will be trained in research and analytics as they apply to the field. To provide you with this unique and rich educational input, the programme draws upon the strength of its faculty ranging across several disciplines including:

• Researchers from social anthropology providing methodological training for empirical ethnographic research.
• Media practitioners and researchers providing professional training related to using audio-visual technologies as research and creative tools, and who will likewise introduce you to media and communication theory.
• Experts in theatrical studies providing pedagogical insights into performative behaviour in public space.
• Film studies scholars providing perspectival insights on the institutional context of media production, distribution, and reception.

After graduating from this study program, you will be prepared to work in the media industry (film and television production), in cultural management (organizing festivals or cultural events), in cultural and media institutions, in NGOs focused on transcultural dialogue or education, in the press and online media, or as a cultural manager in governmental or self-governmental institutions. The achieved cultural and historical education, technical skills, and methodological knowledge uniquely provided by our programme can foreseeably position you favorably within the professional job market, meaning you will be able to hold research, managerial or communication positions in a wide array of cultural, media or social institutions.

Practical Training

You will be trained in practical skills: technical skills in processing audio, photo and video-material as well as in academic writing, critical analysis, and promotional activities. You will master the historical knowledge and analytical skills necessary for the critical analysis of media products and media productions. In other words, the programme offers you competencies which are currently highly-needed and in-demand and which will only become more valuable in the future.

An important aspect of our programme rests in the opportunities it offers to get real hands-on experience through internships at regional film, television, or theatre festivals (such as Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, Film Festival One World, Ekofilm, or Mezipatra), in the Czech public service media, or in regional cultural institutions.

Finally, we will motivate you to bring to the programme and fully integrate your own acumen from your country, culture, and media contexts. The critical understanding of culture most effectively prospers from the sharing and diversity of thought and perspectives.

Goal of Thesis

The standard scope of a Bachelor's thesis ranges from 72,000 to 90,000 characters including footnotes and citations (supplements do not count into the range). A Bachelor's thesis verifies methodological, historical, and theoretical knowledge which is applied to historical, or contemporary ethnographic material.

Eligibility Criteria

This fee-paying Bachelor´s program is open to graduates of secondary schools holding a secondary school certificate.

You do not have to come to Brno personally to take the entrance exam. The result of the admission process depends on the quality of the documents that you provide. Those will be assessed by the admission committee and you will be notified about the results via e-mail.

Terms of Admission

• Meet the eligibility criteria set out in the paragraph above.
• Submit the electronic application in the Masaryk University Information System and pay the application fee.
• Submit all the required documents as described below.
• Pass the entrance exam.

Required documents

1. Statement of purpose (500 words maximum) in English, in which the applicant explains why s/he wishes to study in this degree program.
2. English language certificate - not more than two years old at the time of the submission of the application 
   - open this list of accepted certificates
   - Applicants who have graduated from a secondary school in the following countries (the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand) and have attended the said school for two or more years, do not need to submit test scores.
   
3. Essay in English (1000 words): Conduct research through observations and interviews.

4. Transcript of secondary/high school grades with the titles of courses and examinations you completed.
5. Secondary/high school diploma – if you are yet to graduate, submit a confirmation of studies with the expected graduation date
6. Passport (EU citizens may replace it with the national ID)

Entrance Exam

The evaluation of the applications will be done in two steps:

1. Evaluation of the submitted documents.
2. Selected candidates will be invited for an online interview.

Successful applicants of the first round will be invited for a videoconference interview. Students will receive an e-mail about the next steps and how to set up the interview.

Application Filing Period

1 December - 30 April for the following academic year.

Documents set out above in the Terms of Admission are required to be provided in digital form and attached to the online application by April 30th.

Students who will need a visa to travel to CZ should apply as early as possible to increase their chance to arrive on time.

To be enrolled in a degree study program you have to present an acknowledgment certificate of your former education abroad. This proves that your previous studies are equal to a comparable Czech education and your diploma is valid in the Czech Republic.

Recognition of foreign education is a must along with the entrance exam. It is an administrative part of the admission procedure. No one can be enrolled in the studies without recognition of their previous foreign education.

As a graduate, you will be ready to continue within any graduate programme related to culture, media, or performative arts.

At MUNI, you can apply for M.A. English- language study programmes such as Cultural Sociology, Conflict and Democracy Studies, or International Relations (to name some of the programmes running at MUNI). And in the case of reaching fluency in Czech, at MUNI you will be ready to continue in an M.A. programme across a further array of fields, including anthropology, media studies, history and theory of cinema, theatre, and television.
