Verification of previous education

The procedure for recognizing the fulfillment of the admission requirements under Section 48 (1) and (3) of the Higher Education Act within the admission procedure for applicants at Masaryk University who completed previous foreign secondary or higher education is governed by MU Directive No. 2/2019.

Verification of the admission requirements of graduates of a foreign secondary education

The condition for admission to study in a bachelor’s degree programme is the completion of secondary education finished with a school-leaving examination.

Under Section 48 (4) of the Higher Education Act, the applicant has the following four options to demonstrate the fulfilment of the condition of attaining a foreign secondary education with a school-leaving examination:

a) Proof of the general recognition of a foreign secondary education in the Czech Republic

  • The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of the document on the general recognition of the validity of the foreign document on the attainment of a secondary education in the Czech Republic together with the recognition clause of the validity of a foreign document or an authorised conversion of the certificate of recognition Czech Republic.
  • The document is issued by the regional authorities or the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (more information here).
  • The fee of CZK 1,000 is paid to the regional authority or the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports as part of the procedure for recognizing the equivalence or validity of a foreign secondary education.

b) Certificate of the European Baccalaureate

      • The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of the European Baccalaureate with an official translation into Czech or English (translations are not required for certificates issued in English).
      • This does not apply to the International Baccalaureate completed at a foreign secondary school and which is considered a certificate under Section 48 (4) of the Higher Education Act and for which the procedure is in accordance with (a) or (d).
      • For the International Baccalaureate Diploma completed in the Czech Republic at one of the listed schools (The English College in Prague - English Grammar School, Open Gate - Grammar School and Primary School, PORG - Grammar School and Primary School), it is true that these schools have the consent of the Ministry of Education to complete the education in a different manner in accordance with Section 81 (9) of Act No. 561/2004 Coll. The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of the school-leaving examination in Czech language and literature together with the authorised conversion of the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

c) Completed secondary education in one of the countries with the equivalence agreement (Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Poland and Slovenia)

  • The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of a foreign secondary education document automatically equivalent in the Czech Republic (these are documents proving the attainment of the equivalent of a Czech school-leaving examination in the Slovak Republic, the Republic of Poland (świadectwo dojrzałości), the Republic of Hungary (érettségi bizonyítvány), the Republic of Slovenia and the Federal Republic of Germany (Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife). In the case of documents issued in a language other than Czech, Slovak or English, an official translation in a form of an authorised conversion must also be attached.
  • The required documents can also be submitted in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English to the address of the fakulty.

d) Faculty verification of previous education

  • The applicant shall submit:
    • An officially certified copy of a school-leaving examination certificate or similar document on the proper completion of the secondary education with relevant signatures and stamps authentication in an appropriate manner and an official translation into Czech or English (translations are not required for documents issued in English);
    • Confirmation of the competent foreign authority that the given foreign secondary school is entitled to provide a secondary education in said foreign country (certificate of accreditation) in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English.

If necessary, the faculty will invite the applicant to submit the following documents:

  • Additional information on the content and scope of their foreign secondary school studies in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English.
  • Confirmation from the relevant foreign school or other foreign institution that the graduate is entitled to apply for admission to study in a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme which does not follow the bachelor’s degree programme in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English.

Verification procedure

  • Payment of a CZK 800 fee for acts related to the verification of a foreign education should be paid through the MUNI Shopping centre.
  • Please submit the original of an officially certified copies of all required documents to the following address till June 15:

  • Faculty verification is valid only for the specific programme to which the applicant has been admitted within the current admission procedure at the Faculty of Arts, MU.

All submitted documents must be officially translated into Czech or English (including all stamps, notarial clauses, interpreter’s clauses, certificate of authenticity of signatures, etc.) and inserted into the e-application form in the form of an authorized conversion, only in the case of faculty verification must be submitted in the form of an officially certified copy to the faculty address: The Faculty of Arts MU, Office for Studies – Office for Admission, Arna Nováka 1, 602 00 Brno, The Czech Republic. Translations are not required for documents issued in Slovak or English.

The deadline for sending documents for verification of previous education is June 15.

If the applicant fails to prove the fulfilment of the condition of attaining a secondary education with a school-leaving examination by submitting the documents mentioned above, he or she will not be admitted due to the failure to prove the fulfilment of the requirements for studies under Section 48 (4) of the Higher Education Act.

Verification of the admission requirements of graduates of a foreign higher education

The condition for admission to study in a master’s degree programme which follows a bachelor’s degree programme is the proper completion of studies in any type of study programme.

The condition for admission to study in a doctoral degree programme is the proper completion of studies in a master’s degree programme; additionally, in the art field this includes obtaining an academic degree.

Under Section 48 (5) of the Higher Education Act, the applicant has the following three options to demonstrate the fulfilment of the condition of attaining a foreign higher education:

a) A certificate of recognition of foreign higher education and qualification in the Czech Republic

      • The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of the document on the general recognition of the equivalence or validity of the foreign document on the attainment of a Higher education in the Czech Republic obtained under Sections 89 and 90 of the Higher Education Act or previous legislation.
      • The document is issued by public universities, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic or the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic.

      • The fee of CZK 3,000 is paid to a public university or the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports which conducts assessments within the procedure of the recognition of a foreign higher education.
      • If the certificate states that it is valid only upon the submission of a foreign diploma, it is necessary to insert an authorised conversion of the diploma with an authentication of signatures and stamps in accordance with the international obligations of the Czech Republic and with an official translation into Czech or English.
      • The candidate in the doctoral study programme shall submit, together with the certificate of recognition of foreign higher education, an authorised conversion of the foreign document of foreign higher education with an official translation into Czech or English.

b) Completed higher education in one of the countries with the equivalence agreement (Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Slovenia)

  • These are documents certifying the completion of the study programme in the Slovak Republic (with the exception of diplomas issued by foreign branches of Slovak universities after 2015 which are subject to (c)), in the Republic of Poland, the Republic of Hungary and the Republic of Slovenia (only master’s degree diplomas, bachelor's degree diplomas issued in the Republic of Slovenia are subject to the procedure under (c)).
  • The applicant shall insert into the e-application an authorised conversion of the diploma and the diploma supplement with an official translation into Czech or English (translations are not required for documents issued in Slovak or English) or submit the required documents in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English to the address of the faculty.

c) Faculty verification of previous education

  • The applicant shall submit:
    • An officially certified copy of a diploma or similar document on the proper completion of higher education with relevant signatures and stamps authentication in an appropriate manner and an official translation into Czech or English (translations are not required for documents issued in English);
    • An officially certified copy of the diploma supplement (or the list of completed courses) with an official translation into Czech or English (translations are not required for documents issued in English).

If necessary, the faculty will invite the applicant to submit the following documents:

  • Additional information on the content and scope of foreign university studies in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English.
  • Confirmation of the competent foreign authority that the given foreign university is entitled to provide higher education in said foreign country (certificate of accreditation) in the form of an officially certified copy with an official translation into Czech or English.

Verification procedure
