Description Despite many discussions, teaching is regarded as a profession and teachers as professionals. Goodwin (1994) introduced professional vision as one of the characteristics of a profession. It refers to the set of discursive practices used by professionals to recognize aspects of a situation relevant to their profession. According to Sherin (2007), who introduced this concept into educational research, it refers to the processes of noticing and knowledge-based reasoning. In our study, we define knowledge-based reasoning as consisting of processes of representing, interpreting, explaining, predicting, evaluating and suggesting alternatives of classroom situations. This pilot study focused on knowledge-based reasoning as a component of professional vision of student teachers of English as a foreign language. As the data collection tool, we used VideoWeb – a video-based e-learning environment. The students watched four video sequences from real classrooms and commented on them in written form. At present, students answers are being analysed using qualitative content analysis. The results, in describing the representation of each category in students answers, will suggest the nature of student teachers professional vision and can thus be a starting point for further research.
