| Description | The study pursues syntactic properties of the conditional auxiliary (i. e. the forms bych, by, bychom etc.) in Old Czech. These specific forms of the verb to be (být) are descended from the form of the Proto-Slavic sigmatic aorist. In combination with the l-participle, these forms also functioned as a pluperfect which probably was the origin of the Czech conditional. In relation to this semantic and functional metamorphosis, the aforementioned forms gained the status of stable enclitics. Old Czech period is an era in which the observed forms could still occur in all three cited functions, but the role of the conditional auxiliary probably already stood in a dominant position. The aim of the thesis is to come to the most accurate conclusions possible about the word order (or the prosodic status) of the observed forms at this stage in the development of the Czech language. The outcomes of the analysis relativize some of the older theories by presenting new facts about the word order of the observed forms. |
