| Description | Eva Mikulková makes use of the linguistic deficiencies in a Czech-language Slovenian travel guide named Slovinsko (Baedeker, Praha 2008) to point out the typical mistakes in the declension of Slovenian city names and other toponyms (and rarely also anthroponyms) that a Czech speaker may encounter. The author summarizes here all existing rules for declining foreign toponyms and anthroponyms, and applies these general rules to Slovenian names. In addition to matters of declension, Mikulková also covers the question of when to use a name’s original form vs. the Czech one. She also suggests principles for how to present foreign (Slovene) toponyms in touristic publications. The observations and conclusions here can be applied not only to guide-type publications, but equally to other language acts (written and oral) where the need to decline Slovene proper nouns is obvious. |
