Description | The author of the present article deals with the essay from the point of view of genre studies (genology) as a constructive material of belles-lettres on the example of the works of the interwar Czech essay, especially of those by František Xaver Šalda, Karel Čapek, Jaroslav Durych, Jakub Deml, Jan Čep, and essayistic gnomes by Milan Kundera. The essay in general may represent a building stone of literature, but also as a fragment of their artefact or as a complementary generic layer (diary of a writer, footprints); it could also be a building stone of the so-called physiological sketch, of the nature depiction, of the genres on the margin of literature and, moreover, in short stories. Milan Kunderas specific gnomic essayistic writing, extremely condensed, concise and brief, sometimes schematic and naive in which subjectivism and voluntarism fill the artefact up to the extreme limits. Perhaps this essay stretching up the the utmost limits is the evidence and the reflection of an extraordinary strong personality, most probably one of the last at the time of – maybe – the most striking twilight of human individuality. |
