Description | In his seminal article Aesthetic Function, Norm and Value as Social Facts, in regard to the aesthetic function, Jan Mukařovský describes the mechanism of how individual artefacts are integrated into or removed from the world of art. This mechanism shows similarity to popular culture models appearing in social sciences throughout the entire 20th century, trying to depict the ways via which we distinguish between art, pop culture and other fields of human creativity. Among these models, one can identify e.g. dichotomic, linear, circular, triadic or fractal model. Visualised models of the concepts of pop culture and art clearly determine the structure of the examined area and the motion of features within or outside the structure. That results in particular theoretical approaches and methods of examination, which- as is evident from the models – are not exclusive but complementary. On selected examples – films and series inspired by detective novels about Sherlock Holmes – we then want to prove that the model that can be synthetized from Mukařovský’s text anticipates understanding culture as a fractal, or more likely rhizome, even though it may not appear at first sight at all. Thus, Mukařovský’s work is interesting today not only from the historical perspective, but also as a practical tool for analyzing the relation of cultural artefacts to art. |
