| Description | The lexical resources to Frank Zappa usually give two contemporary composers who influenced him in his youth. Neither of them was an American, but both have spent at least the final stages of their lives in the US. Igor Stravinsky and Edgard Varése. Why the young Zappa chose two of the greatest living composers? Intuitively? Based on internal affinities? Or the quality of their work was so obvious? Varése for Zappa was a true idol. For years, Zappa watched his work, it sought, studied, and when he wanted with more than seventy composer finally meet in person, Varése traveled to Europe to realized one of his most profound works, Poéme électronique (1958). The personal meeting never took place, but preserved Zappa's texts prove decisive influence of Varése's aesthetics on his personal development. If we add this to the fact that Varése had almost no pupils, and throughout his life he was rarely appreciated as a composer, this episodic and seemingly marginal relationship of the young experimental musician to the one of the key figures of 20th century music has to be considered remarkable at least. As the author of a monograph on cooperation Le Corbusier, Iannis Xenakis and Edgard Varése on Poéme électronique I would like to broaden the interpretative context of the issue. |
