Description | Th e study focuses on the semi-professional sphere of Czech cinema and strives to highlight the dynamic relationship between amateur and professional productions, namely on the example of the so-called sponsored films (podnikový fi lm) that were produced in the socialist Czechoslovakia, particularly during the fifties and sixties. Besides offering an answer to the question why the semi-professional fi lm production mode emerged in that very period and what enabled its operation and development, the text attempts to problematize the border between amateur and professional fi lm and thus disrupt the stereotypical notions of the nature of amateur cinema. Th e author perceives factory studios and clubs of fi lm amateurs where sponsored films came into being as a transitional area between amateur and professional production and she demonstrates that amateur fi lm did not represent an alternative to the official (professional), either in terms of production practice or creative processes. Th e respective modes of fi lm production were rather parallel spheres with distinctive cultural and social functions. |
