| Description | The problem of gender marking in the Czech language has not been satisfactory solved yet as the growing demand to have feminine variants for almost all job titles (for instance the Czech word “chiruržka” has also been codified as correct) is in sharp contrast to the growing trend of avoiding gender markers in surnames, mainly in surnames coming from the Western European languages. However, the situation is more complicated when it comes to Russian surnames as Russian is also a Slavic language and not to use declensions in surnames with obviously Slavic endings is in Czech language hardly applicable in practice. Therefore, this article tries to answer the question of why there should be feminine forms of various job titles while feminine forms of surnames are sometimes considered redundant. The article also outlines several options as to how to use surnames without gender markers in Czech morphosyntactic alignments as not declining them would not be acceptable in Czech from the grammatical point of view. |
