Description The author of the present contribution deals wuth the conception of the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University as one of the centres of Central-European research. Besides, he demonstrates the activity of the professional association The Central European Centre of Slavonic Studies, the internet journal Proudy (Streams), and international cooperation when analysing Central Europe, especially with German, Polish, and Austrian institutions and with individual researchers from other countries, e. g. from Russia, Great Britain etc., which was presented in several publications. The initial conceptions manifests Central Europe as a cultural and spiritual space completed by geopolitical contexts. The author accentuates diachrony and synchrony of Central Europe, its role of the contradictory transitive area, but also a potential bridge overcoming contradictions a manifesting the shifts towards its personalistic aspect. Central Europe should be demythized; it is not the return to monarchy or, in general, to the past, just the opposite: to provide it with the truthful dimension, not to exploit the notion itself for expansionistic purposes, to construct Central Europe as heterogeneous, pluralistic cultural and political space.
