| Description | In the Czech collective memory, the outbreak of the First World War is overshadowed by the emergence of the First Republic in 1918. On the basis of Peter Härtling´s novel "Big, Little Sister" (1998) the following questions are pursued: Is the sentence "What they had experienced, let them be silent" an appeal to the readers, to think the possible commentary of the German, Jewish and Czech witnesses of the brutal scene? The scene with Serb-lynched Serbs is critically questioned against the background of reporting in the Brno newspaper Tagesbote and causes reflections on differences in the reconstructive memory of the Czech and German readers. |
