| Description | The Anabaptists lived on the edge of society from the very beginning. Due to their radical religious and social requierements, they were perceived as unwelcome heretics and revolutionaries. In the Czech lands, the Anabaptists were tolerated only thanks to the protection of Moravian (or Czech) nobility for almost one hundred years. The situation for the Anabaptists was much better in non-royal towns administration of which came under noblemen's competence than in royal cities where the ruler was able to take a serious action against the Anabaptists. The Anabaptists' position in towns and cities was quite ambiguous, because one one hand the Anabaptists were persecuted (by the ruler), on the other hand they were tolerated (by nobility). This paper is an insight into the urban life of these social "outsiders" stigmatized both for their different religion and lifestyle. |
