Description The paper is conceived as an introduction to a conference on the possibilities of writing a biography about the artist today. First, a brief overview of various ways of art history writing about "the life and work of the artist" is given. After discussing the role of the author in the 1960s, we can ideally typically identify about four basic positions in which the author of a work of art can find himself: (a) to become a dialogue between the empirical knowledge of the creator and his work and at the same time a synthetic exploration of his place and role in history; (b) Exploring the historical role of the artist takes into account his unique personal anchorage and sociological anchorage at the same time; (c) The function of the author is inserted into the specific order of discourse which enables it; (d) The creator is part of the various circumstances that form the context in the creation of works of art. When researching a work of art, we are therefore interested in its intention (in which the creator also participates) and the understanding of the work of art. In this context, the author draws attention to the term "perigraphy" of the Enlightenment scholar Carl Lodoli from Venice, in which we find a possible interaction of partial researches of various circumstances of the creation of works of art within a biographical monograph.
