Description This paper presents social network analysis (SNA) as a useful approach to study of interaction in educational research. Firstly, it introduces basic SNA concepts and puts them into context with research on interaction in education. Secondly, the paper presents three basic ways in which SNA can enrich research on interaction, namely - 1. visualization of interaction with the help of sociograms; 2. identification of prominent actors in the group; 3. inter-group comparison and intra-group comparison over time.
