Description | It is well known that the two earliest editions of the novel Jin Ping Mei (from the Wanli and the Chongzhen reigns, respectively) disagree: their texts are not always the same. There are differences on the lexical level, which are not of much consequence to the overall narrative, but also differences which do have some effect on the novel´s content. Certain chapters are quite different; in many other instances, poems or songs were deleted and not always replaced. This paper explores the latter. It explains why a chantefable, recited in chapter 73 of the Wanli edition, has been deleted from the Chongzhen edition. |
