Description | The work approaches a metaphor and symbol from the position of structural semiotics and processional linguistics. Its aim is to define a place and relationship between a symbol and metaphor within the theory of expressive means of literary and scientific discipline trying to create a specific metalanguage, which is able to describe literary tools and - as well as grammar of a language - to affect a specific structural level of the language reality. Symbols and metaphors represent a basic, but in its nature, different expressive means of a text, in the theory of expressive means. They are also in close relationships because symbols become a structural component of a metaphor. The term "symbol" represents many different facts. It includes the area of primary symbols, i.e. symbols-emblems (e.g. coat-of-arms, flags, awards) or international symbols-pictograms, symbols-masks, symbols-uniforms or symbols-ceremonious objects. This group also includes scientific languages (of mathematics, logic). Secondary symbols reached their symbolic meanings in the second plan, within "new" stories or discourse into which they got. This type of symbolic meanings originates by means of lexical meaning as a superstructure above the basic in case of language symbols. In literary communication a new symbol and new metaphor work as universal means by means of which it is possible to describe an immensely rich reality. |
