Description The early modern historian literally “trips over” construction or architectural material at every step – in urbaria, economic instructions, seignorial correspondence, work contracts, old maps and plans. These are usually viewed within the context of social and economic history, while the aspects of architectural construction is left to art historians. This is a brief consideration of some aspects of the role material played in early modern architecture, and an attempt at an interdisciplinary description of a theme at the intersection of history and art history. The rarity and quality of the material reflected the standing of the owner and master-builder, the artist and the person who commissioned the work. This was why important early modern architects and artists selected the material themselves for their major works, and the quality of the material was seen as an essential prerequisite for a successful work. It is typical of early modern architecture that some of the material used in construction was to be admired by the viewer, while some was to be hidden.
