Description | The present study attempts to arrive at findings that tell us something about the nature of architectural commissioning in the early modern period. First of all, it is evident that the commissioning of an architectural or artistic work in the early modern period is a manifestation of a hierarchical social interaction that goes beyond the dimension of artistic creation. In this case, it is a communication between a high-ranking representative of the urban patriciate, which in the early 17th century personifies the upper class in this relationship, and a representative of the guild of builders, one level below. In this situation, the social difference between the persons involved is no obstacle to the builder actively approaching the builder at a joint lunch with a proposal to change the original plan for the reconstruction of the old town hall into a completely new architectural concept. The active and proactive role of the builder towards the developer is expressed in the text on the one hand by the statement that the mayor was not angry, but on the other hand by his words about the architect's 'constant dodging'. |
