Description At present, Czech students of upper secondary schools learn Latin mostly two hours a week for two years. In such a short time it is impossible to cover all the grammar and syntax necessary for reading the original ancient texts. The paper tries to show that one should not abandon reading the originals, but look for ways to offer students an authentic reading experience. One possibility is to work with easy medieval texts, especially those that were intended for a wider reading audience in their time. Medieval encyclopaedias, especially their natural history sections on plants, animals and minerals, are a very useful source of such texts. The encyclopaedias are written in simple language and offer many interdisciplinary overlaps, metatextual information, intersections with the present day, and suggestions for students’ creative work.
