Description The aim of this chapter is to characterise the theories that determine the development of contemporary andragogical thought, which is primarily associated with the second half of the 20th century. In accordance with the works of current authors (Bélanger; Merriam and Bierema; Merriam and Cafarella), five fundamental streams of learning theories can be identified: behavioural, humanistic, cognitive, socio-cognitive, and constructivist (including socio-constructivist). Based on these, newer derivative theories have emerged: transformative learning theory and experiential learning theory. The greatest emphasis in this chapter is placed on these seven streams.
