Description | This expert study focuses on the topic of dance expressions during kermesse festivals, especially in Brno and its surroundings, with an emphasis on the context of dance in public spaces. It aims to briefly characterize the nature of these dance expressions within the contemporary ethno-cultural tradition. On the basis of an interpretative analysis of qualitative research data, it will attempt to determine the principal meanings and functions that (folk) dance fulfils in the given context of public spaces. From a theoretical perspective, the study is primarily based on the participatory-presentational background of the Canadian ethnochoreologist Andriy Nahachewsky, which explores the role of dance as a means for active participation and presentation within a public space. Additionally, it aims to examine the position of dance and a specific dance occasion - the kermesse - in the process of negotiating local identity. The study offers findings about the current status and functions of folk dance in the context of the ethnocultural tradition of kermesse festivals. These findings can contribute to a broader discussion of the dancescape within a Czech environment and offer insights into the relationship between dance and ethno-cultural traditions as a key element of cultural identity. |
