Description | In this paper, I examine the underlying structure and meaning of additive numerals like `two hundred and three' in two classes of languages, which involve an overt conjunction marker in additive numerals: obligatory classifier languages (illustrated by (colloquial) Farsi) and non-classifier languages (illustrated by Czech). Building on the previous literature on the topic (e.g., Hurford 1975, Ionin & Matushansky 2018), I explore the two stratiegies of expressing the relationship between arithmetical addition and mereological sum formation. In order to capture the data, I propose a mereotopological analysis (Grimm 2012) that attempts to spellout out explicitly certain aspects of the proposals by Nouwen (2016) and Matushansky & Zwarts (2017). |
