Description his paper examines Georgi Gospodinov's novel „Time Shelter“ its translation into Czech and presents selected manifestations of intertextuality in it through the prism of translation – what challenges the translator has to deal with when encountering intertextuality, a complex of connections between different texts, in the original language, and what are the possible translation strategies that would bring the poetics of the original text as close as possible to the recipient – the reader of the novel in a foreign language. It is known that Georgi Gospodinov's texts are woven from references to various works of world literature. The article focuses on some examples in which the translator could convey intertextuality adequately but also shows examples that were not decoded correctly. Achieving successful functioning of the translated work in the cultural environment of the target language is a very complex process, as the translator and his way of decoding and transcoding the text play a key role in it.
