Description | The article discusses educational and didactical function of the setting of ancient symposium and transformation of this setting in a very important literary genre. It describes the constitution of the social institution of symposium from the times of Homer till the period of Plato (including the problematic of formation of the genre of literary symposium). Finally, three late ancient educational works are analyzed (Gellius' Noctes Atticae, Macrobius' Saturnalia and Martianus Capella's De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii), with intention to reflect the versatility of this educational setting. |
