| Description | This article presents a sociolinguistic analysis of an encoding process in informal French, called 'verlan', which is used for the creation of neologisms in French youth slang. Its evolution was greatly influenced by the media, which stereotyped this process as the emblem of the marginalized multiracial youth culture of French suburb areas. By analysing common dictionary items, youth slang from country areas as well as two novels, this study tries to break these stereotypes and prove that this process is progressive, complex, and an unfortunate victim of social fracture in contemporary French society. Finally, a small reflection on the equivalence of youth slang translation is presented. |
