Description The doctoral thesis deals with school management, particularly the head teacher and the way he/she views and experiences the leadership processes. The core of the paper is an empirical research, which was aimed at answering following questions: How does a head teacher really manage the school – how does he/she perceives his/her role, what meanings does he/she give his/her role, what does he/she actually do at work? What influences the role of a head teacher, what kind of pressures are there? How does the head teacher cope with the pressure? What leadership strategies does the head teacher choose for the school to perform successfully? What impact do these strategies have on the lives of the other actors of the school community? In the research. The answer to the question 'What is the life of the elementary school head teacher like?' is inevitably 'Very difficult in many ways.' Besides the difficulties brought about by the legislative environment, the usual financial shortage, the size of the school and the community, the head teachers are subject to a considerable pressure of a complex of expectations coming from his/her immediate surroundings. In this context, the personal and professional characteristics of the head teachers, which in a way filter all these pressures, turned out to be very important. The leadership strategies described in the paper arise as a consequence of these factors. These strategies are on the one hand dominated by an exclusive approach to decision making and on the other hand by an effort to reduce potential risk. The research also distinctly showed and documented a clear connection between the head teacher's behaviour or his/her leadership style and the long-time school climate.
