Description Quaternary benzo[c]phenantridine alkaloids (QBAs) belong to the group of isochinoline alkaloids. This sort of alkaloids is naturally occurring mainly in plants from families Papaveraceae, Fumaraceae, Ranunculaceae and Rutuaceae. At present, at least 16 natural alkaloids of this type are known (Table 1). According to the substitution of benzo[c]phenanthridine ring system two main types of QBAs are distinguished. Nitidine group includes 2, 3, 8, 9-tetrasubstituted alkaloids. The main representatives are nitidine, avicine and fagaronine. For sanguinarine group is typical substitution in positions 2, 3, 7, 8 on the aromatic skeleton.
