Description | Eisner's language may seem rather antiquated, be it in his essay Lovers ("Milenky") or the entry on J. J. David in "Československá vlastivěda", the young nation's all-encompassing attempt at a reference work. This is not only due to the influence of August Sauer. The nomenclature of German literary regionalism ("Heimatliteratur") has been popular also in Czech literary criticism of the time. Indeed, Arne Novák, the influential Professor of German and Czech Studies, has subscribed to the conservative values such as national uniqueness ("národní osobitost", "kořenná rázovitost"), nation's own merits ("národní svébytnost"), or the strength of the race ("plemenná síla"), which have been later made infamous by the National Socialism. Since 1933, Eisner has been more careful in the use of such inflamatory language, but not perfectly so. |
